There are several ways that you can go about replacing a lost US passport. The application can be done online or in person. You can also download the DS-11 form and mail it in with the required supporting documents. The quickest and easiest way is to make use of an expediting company.

Report Loss

The first step is always to report the lost US passport so that it can be cancelled. You can also just download and include a DS-64 form with your application. Even if you do find it, it can’t be validated again and should be returned to the Department of State.

If In A Foreign Country

If you are abroad, you should contact your nearest consulate or embassy as soon as possible. They cannot expedite the issue of a new passport if you are overseas but they can issue you one with a limited validity if you need to return home. All passports are printed in the United States and posted overseas if that is where you apply.

Expediting

You could still apply through an expediting company from any other country. This is made even easier because most of them will allow you to apply through their website. They will be able to expedite the process and it will only take slightly longer than the time required for international posting. If you don’t mind the wait, you can apply through the consulate or embassy to the Department of State. There is a different process than if you where to do it locally so check with them about that.

Replacement In The U.S.

If you apply to the Department of State in America, it is possible to have the process expedited. This can be done in person at a passport agency or any other official agent such as the Post Office. This application has to be done on a DS-82 form. It will still only halve the time that it would normally take and could be delivered within 2 to 3 weeks.

24-Hour Replacement

If you choose to use a passport expediting company you could have your passport as soon as within 24 hours. This is dependent on first making a booking however. These companies usually have various options that range between one to two weeks and next day delivery.

Documents

Regardless of the way in which you apply, you will have to supply originals and copies of all the documents required. These should be posted in sturdy and protective envelopes so that they are not damaged. It is also advisable to used tracking for postage. If you are applying through the Department of State then clearly mark expedited on the envelope if that is the option you want.

The original documents that have to be submitted are your proof of citizenship and identification like a birth certificate or government ID. If you want to expedite the replacement of your lost US pasport or even a damaged American passport, you might also need to supply proof that you intend to travel. Two photos need to be provided as well as an application form and a statement that it was lost.
