If you are considering overseas travel that requires applying for a U.S. passport, you may have been concerned about the process. You don’t need to worry any longer. Obtaining a passport is not that difficult. You will need to find the regulations and follow them closely and the application process will be a cinch.
How Long Does it Take?
You should allow plenty of time for the application process and the document processing to be completed before you are due to leave on your international journey. In most cases, six months prior to your departure date is adequate time. If you live in certain areas, or if you apply during certain times of the year, the process may be delayed. Where you plan to travel can have some effect on the processing time. If you need the passport in a hurry, extra charges apply.
Find the Nearest Passport Agency
The application process for a passport usually begins at a passport application facility. These offices can be located in post offices, county officials’ offices, or libraries. In metropolitan areas, there may be an office that only deals with passport applications. When you prepare to apply, you will need to make an appointment to process your application form. A preliminary telephone call is an excellent idea.
Complete the Application Form
The application form itself is government form DS-11. You can get a copy of the form at the Passport Office or online. If you complete the form online and fill it out, you can then print out the form and take it with you to the application center. If you must use a handwritten application, it should be completed in black ink and must be printed rather than in cursive. It’s a good idea to make an extra copy for referral purposes during the process.
Additional Documentation
Other documents to be submitted with the DS-11 include at least one document that has photo ID. This can be a military ID card, a state driver’s license or ID card or an employee badge. Copies of the appropriate documentation must be submitted with the application. A birth certificate must be certified and signed. A government seal from the issuing organization is mandated.
Photos
You will need properly sized passport photos that are clear enough to identify the bearer. You can now have these photos taken at many passport offices. Applicants can also prepare and print their own passport photos.
Denials
Occasionally a passport application will be denied. If you know in advance that you owe the IRS back taxes or that you owe more than $2,500 in child support payments, you should be certain that the issues are resolved before your application is submitted. Failure to do so could mean you can’t make your trip.
Applying For A United States Passport is just part of the preparation process when traveling internationally. If you remember to complete the United States passport application form according to instructions and submit them to the proper agency, you should have no problem receiving your passport in time to enjoy your travel. You will need to remit the necessary payments and fees along with your documentation.
