Sewers of Paris
The sewer of Paris, located below your location paris, has drained waste water since the 13th century under the reign of Philip Auguste, while the streets were all paved. Covered sewers were introduced during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the network that now numbers more than 2100km of tunnels was started in 1850.
These sewers of Paris are used to drain water from the street, they carry sanitary pipes (now in separated pipes), they also carry drinking water and water used to wash the streets of Paris, there are also telecommunication cables, and occasionally rats!
Not a long time ago, the sewers of Paris were also carrying tourists, initially with carts which were moving on walkways along the walls of the tunnel, then through carriages pulled by a small locomotive and until the 70’s , they could be accessed by small boat.
Today, there are no longer carts or boats, but it remains the very original Paris sewers Museum. This museum is located in the sewers behind the Quai d’Orsay on the left bank, close to your apartment in paris. You can visit the network and find out about the collector of the Avenue Bosquet, Street Cognacq-Jay’s sewer.
