Lees Ferry Trading Post and Fort are historical places on the northern border of Arizona. The area was settled by Mormon John D. Lee. Because of its unique location on the Colorado River it was the only place where the river could be crossed for 260 miles. The rest of the river area is all tall limestone and sandstone cliffs which prevent a crossing.
The fort was built during an uprising between the settlers and the Navajo tribe. The trading post followed in 1913.
Today the community is best known as the beginning point of the Grand Canyon and the place where you can begin adventures with rafting on the Colorado River.
Because of the popularity of river rafting you will need to get your permit to do so at least a year in advance. You may be able to get on with a commercial guide but you had better call them way in advance too so that you don’t miss the opportunity to challenge the great river!
