There are many fascinating holiday destinations around the world. But few can match the varied cultural delights of little Lanzarote, the small Spanish owned Canary Island that is located off the coast of Africa. Whose development into a modern tourist destination has been largely shaped by the influence of a local artist called César Manrique.

As a popular holiday destination for the beach crowd Lanzarote has an often missed rich cultural background as well for anyone wishing to explore it,and with an excellent choice of Lanzarote holiday villas there’s always plenty of places to stay

Anyone who visits Lanzarote soon encounters the name of César Manrique as his influence is everywhere. Starting right from the airport, where one of his best known giant wind toy sculptures is located, through to their accommodation. As it is thanks to him that all of the apartments and villas in Lanzarote are painted a uniform white colour. Whilst there are no high rise buildings or ad billboards blotting the landscape.

Manrique was born in 1919 in the capital city of Arrecife and developed a life long love affair with Lanzarote from a very young age. His family owned a summer house in the beach resort of Famara, which is located in then north of the island and which is noted for its natural beauty. And here the young Manrique would gaze at the reflection of the huge Famara massif cliff range in the ebbing surf and rock pools.

The young Manrique went on to study art in Madrid, against his parent’s wishes, before becoming involved with the Spanish surrealist movement in the 1950´s. A brave move in Franco´s Spain at the time. Before heading off to New York under the patronage of the Rockefellers to study and exhibit there. Where he rubbed shoulders with contemporaries such as Andy Warhol.

Manrique returned home as a seasoned traveller with a passion for both art and architecture and was well aware of the devastion that modern building could bring so he championed the fusion of art, architecture and tourism which is appreciated by visitors and locals alike even though he is no longer with us.

Additional information about available apartments in Lanzarote can be found on the Lanzarote1.com website.

Gaudi is one of the most well known modernist architects in the world, a number of his works have been made in “the city of wonders” Barcelona. Let’s see what his four most important works of art.
La Sagrada Família
This unfinished temple commenced in April 1882, and Gaudí worked on it until he died in 1926, spending the final twelve years of his life exclusively on this mission. It is a colossal traveller attraction, and has become one of the most instantly-recognisable sites in Spain. Built totally from donations, it still remains unfinished, and is expected to be completed during the next 20 years or so. It costs €10 to get in, with discounts costing €8. Guided tours are in English and Spanish each day, and cost €14. If you want to visit Barcelona, you will arrive at Aeroport Barcelone.
The Parc Güell
Commissioned by Eusebi Güell again as a luxury villa, this stunning park is a pleasure to walk around. Built between 1900 and 1914, it was intended to provide up to 60 luxury homes for the great and the good of the city, but ended up being turned into a park instead. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, it includes Gaudí’s residence, known as La Torre Rosa, which includes furniture that he designed himself, the main terrace with a bench in the form of a serpent, and a big dragon at the entrance. It is located to the north of the Gràcia district, and you should take the Metro L3 headed for Lesseps to reach it.
La Casa Milá
Also known as La Pedrera, this is maybe Gaudí’s most immediately-recognisable work. Built between 1906 and 1910, it was built for a married couple who was known for their flamboyant lifestyle, and is even less conventional than Casa Battlló. No straight lines are used in the structure and the ground plans are irregular, but one of the most interesting features is the roof terrace with its surreal chimneys. It could be reached by taking the Metro L3 or L5 to Diagonal. To enjoy this wonderful monument, you can book a Voyage Barcelone
La Casa Battlló
Situated on the Passeig de Gràcia, this is an extraordinary structure and a favourite for many. It is characterised by its incredible curls, and makes use of ceramic tiles and mosaic throughout, which was some of Gaudí´s favourite materials. It has a eccentric and eerie appearance, and is a very original work of art.

Holidays are one of the best stress relievers around, as they give you the chance to get away from the daily routine of work and household chores. And when you choose a destination that has lots of sunshine and a laidback pace it is that much easier to switch off quickly.

Within Europe, there are only one or two places that offer reliably good weather all year round with the main hotspots the Canary Islands. This is undeniably due to their location at the southern most point of the whole Eurozone, off the coast of north Africa. And of these seven islands it is Lanzarote that has the lowest annual rainfall and is the most easterly in location. As a holiday destination it is well developed, with a good infrastructure that has been maintained and updated throughout the last forty years.

There is plenty of choice when it comes to accommodation, with three main resorts and a variety of more rural locations. For the traveler who likes to have self-catering facilities, Lanzarote apartments offer the widest choice at the most reasonable prices. For more personal space and privacy, the best option is to hire one of the many villas in Lanzarote available for rent. They come with the added benefit of stylish interiors, heated swimming pools, entertainment facilities and all mod cons on offer.

A large number of Lanzarote Villas are also occupied by their owners at certain periods of the year and this is probably why a large number are maintained in tip top condition and equipped with many of the little holiday items many families would normally have to pack.

Within the ever popular resort of Puerto del Carmen, there is a wide choice of restaurants, with those situated in the old harbour area having the most atmospheric setting. Although to be fair, several of the best establishments are to be found just outside Puerto del Carmen itself, only a short cab ride away. The six kilometers of seafront promenade gives access to beautiful golden beaches. And recent improvements to this maritime roadway means that it is now fully adapted for pedestrians to enjoy, with spacious walkways and very little traffic.

At night, there are many bars and clubs that make good destinations for an after dinner drink, with most open until the early hours. For those who are more active during the day, there is a huge array of activities to select from, Lanzarote golf holidays for example are extremely popular.

Excursions are very popular for those who don’t wish to drive, whilst there are also many sports to participate in, including fishing, sailing, cycling and hill-walking to name but a few. Many visitors to the island are charmed by the tranquility and unspoiled scenery, often choosing holidays in Lanzarote year after year.

Anytime I travel, particularly to European countries, I try to reduce my lodging expenses to use almost all of my spending budget in getting a good time rather than in sleeping. That’s why booking cheap hotels has become a big concern for me. Generally you are able to find great offers for tidy and comfy facilities almost everywhere, however in European countries many of these resorts have common bathing rooms, which I personally don’t mind. I always want to spend almost all of my time walking the place, knowing the historic tourist attractions, speaking to local men and women as well as savoring the regional cuisine, rather than remaining inside my hotel room.

In these days, with the exchange rates, when you don’t get paid in Euros or Pounds it can be difficult to travel Europe with a affluent spending budget, unless you are a wealthy man. Even locating very cheap hotels you’ll usually spend no less than 40 Euros per night for a single or double room. That’s why I am really discriminating whenever I am searching to get my reservations as with each Euro I save out of my lodging costs, I have an usable Euro for getting a good time.

Of course, you will find countries as well as cities that happen to be more expensive than others, like United Kingdom as well as the city of Zurich. When I program to go to expensive places I make them part of broader vacation plan, also visiting less expensive places; in this way I make up my daily expenses along the whole vacation. I also try to organize thoroughly ahead of time my visits to expensive places, in order to go to the important spots in a swifter way and spend less days there. If I pick cheap hotels near around the interest places I book here!

The last year I went to Britain as well as Spain, consequently I stayed less time in United Kingdom, but I discovered several spots I have never happened to be there before. I spent three nights in Manchester and 2 in Liverpool before travelling to Spain to devote 18 nights. It took me some effort to find cheap hotels in Manchester, however I eventually discovered a twenty-five pounds per night small lodge really in close proximity to downtown. My trip to this city ended up being wonderful and, as I am a soccer enthusiast, I valued plenty visiting the Manchester United installations.

After almost 7 days in Britain I flew to Spain, more particularly to the south of Spain. I stayed 7 days in Barcelona and also almost a couple weeks in the amazing Majorca, located inside the Balearic Islands. I discovered several cheap hotels in Majorca below twenty Euros for every day! Therefore I chose to devote the rest of my trip in this great place which provides a wide variety of things to do and places to go to, and in addition a really relaxed environment to have a genuine vacation.

Sun, beaches, aquaparks, exciting excursions (like the tour to the caves of Drac), numerous monuments in diverse architectonic types, like Baroque, Gothic and Muslim. Undoubtedly that finding so cheap hotels allowed me to have a great time in this stunning island which, by the way, offers as well one of my favorite cuisine, the Spanish.
