When visiting Brownsville you will certainly be interested in studying the history of the area to get a better feel for the area. The Brownsville Heritage Complex offers the opportunity to see the home built by Charles Stillman in 1850 when he first settled the area and founded the town. It is now part of the complex for you to tour. Situated on the same land that it was built on in 1850 this house is furnished as it would have been in the 1800′s to help you get a better understanding of life in those times.
There is also, on the grounds, the Children’s Heritage and Cultural Learning Center where children have access to a small library, rotating exhibits, and can touch and feel the artifacts to get a better understanding of what they are made of and how they were used. In the dress-up station they will be able to try on clothing from the era and see if they would like to have to wear them today.
To get a real sense of the history you may want to visit the Heritage Resource Center where photographs, documents, textiles and objects from the 1800′s are stored. Each piece is now available in digital form to preserve the originals and make researching the era easier.
