Let’s say that at least 50% of Soccer Coaching Drills must concentrate on improving player’s trapping skills. You’ll easily reject it as a silly assumption. But No! Research shows that trapping along with passing and dribbling skills alone decide whether your team is capable of winning matches or not.
When a player catches the ball and is able to maintain its possession with him, it’s trapping. Soccer exercises like these let the players use their feet, chest and thighs for this.
It’s vital for your players to master the skill of trapping the ball. If they can’t trap the ball, they are sure to lose their grip over the match because this is very basic. Some of the following techniques help in enhancing the trapping skills of the players.
Make use of your feet: Make your players learn the primary skill of involving their feet in holding the ball. Especially with younger players in kids soccer drills, it is important to make them use the inside of their foot. It is emphasized for the reason that inside area of the foot is big enough to catch hold of the ball.
Coaching Youth Soccer Practice Drills
During soccer coaching drills, the high ranking and senior players should be educated on the use of foot, its crown, and instep of the foot plus the whole foot. In cases where the ball bounces a lot, it is best to make them use their shin or ankle to tackle the ball.
Thigh Movement: Speedy and bouncy ball can be controlled by simply using the thigh. Players should be taught to face of the ball, use one thigh to catch the ball and the other to stand on the ground. Most importantly, practice dropping your knee once it connects with the ball for the ball to drop down and stay with you rather than getting away.
Master the skill of capturing the ball using the knee and then dropping the knee so the ball plunges down and stays within range by intensively working on this exercise.
Use the Chest: Similar to the role of a thigh, the chest also plays an important part in trapping the ball that is high up in the air. Teach your players to tackle the ball using their chest by getting in front of the ball and take their chest out. The ball will therefore loose its pace immediately and drop down right away to the feet.
Nevertheless, soccer training drills should be careful not to expose young players too much to this skill. When they try to tackle the ball using the chest, it is their normal tendency to use their hands. This can become a serious issue if they tend to become habitual of tackling the ball with hands.
