When planning your Rhode Island Tourism schedule you may want to include a trip to the Museum of Newport History. This facility began in 1854 and has been active ever since. They have collected thousands of pieces of information, artifacts and printed materials to show the changes that have happened in Newport over the centuries.
There are tours offered by the Historic Society to give you a better understanding of the foundation of the community. You will be able to see some of the changes in the town but also see some of the buildings that have survived over the years. One of those buildings is the old museum which has been used for all these years and is still part of the new facility. It is on the same grounds as the “new” facility and attached with a slate roof, brick veneer and steel shutter to keep it safe from the weather and threat of fire.
Located at the foot of Washington Square the Museum of Newport History is waiting to take you on a memorable trip to the past. It will show you pictures and tell the stories of the hard working people that made Newport one of the leading communities in the founding of our nation. Stop in anytime on Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm or on Saturday from 9:30 am to noon.
