The New Amsterdam Theatre was built in the early 1900′s by partners A.L. Erlanger and Marcus Klaw and got its Art Nouveau design by architects Herts and Tallant. When the theater was constructed, it was the largest one in New York, and could seat over 1700 people. The New Amsterdam Theatre, along with the Lyceum Theatre that was built around the same time, is the oldest surviving Broadway venue, which is why actors are honored to perform there.
